Plan a brochure that reads well when folded

Start with what the reader should understand and do next. Then choose a fold to discuss with the printer, confirm the production template, and place the content in the order it will actually be seen. The available folds, papers and dimensions are listed in the product details.

1. Separate flat and folded size

Record the sheet’s open width and height and the brochure’s closed dimensions, including units. If it must fit a holder or envelope, measure that usable space and test a folded mockup. The catalog reference dimensions are not an approved panel template.

2. Confirm the fold and panel widths

A half fold, a letter style trifold and a Z-fold open differently. Treat these as fold concepts to discuss, not a list of confirmed product options. Ask for the exact template and fold direction before design. Panels that fold inward may need different widths; do not simply divide the flat width equally or apply a universal adjustment.

3. Match paper to handling

Describe whether the brochure will sit in a holder, be mailed or be handed out. Ask about the actual paper, finish, thickness and any scoring needed for the selected fold. Test a physical sample for folding, glare and writing if required. Paper weight alone does not specify thickness or folding behavior.

Walk through the opening sequence

For an illustrative service brochure, let the closed cover identify the service and audience. Use the first reveal to answer a practical question, then place supporting details and a clear contact route where they remain easy to find. Number the panels on a blank mockup, fold it, and transfer that order to the approved template. The outside spread is not necessarily read from left to right.

Proof the assembled brochure

Print a layout proof at its intended dimensions, following the template’s side orientation, and fold it. Check the cover, opening direction, panel sequence and closed edges. Keep important text clear of trim and folds. Review URLs, contact details, offer conditions and image quality. This paper check tests layout; it does not approve the production stock or color.

Give us enough detail

Include flat and folded dimensions, fold reference, printed sides, quantity per version, paper preference, finish, artwork status and requested delivery date. Ask whether folding, scoring, proofing, packing and shipping are included. Confirm whether delivery is folded or flat.

Each fold has its own template, because panels that fold inward may need to be slightly narrower so the brochure closes flat. Ask for the template for your chosen fold rather than reusing one made for another fold or another printer.

Your artwork, in three clear steps

  1. Start at the final size. Use the selected product template. Extend background artwork through the bleed; keep names, logos and contact details inside the safe area.
  2. Use your originals. Use the highest-resolution original images. Enlarging a screenshot does not restore detail. Review both sides, spelling, crop and any QR code at actual size.
  3. Review before ordering. Attach the final file to the selected product. For supported Studio formats, export the print PDF and review its report. The Studio uses RGB; specialty finishes, folds and dielines require product-specific instructions.

Which fold should I choose?

Tri fold is the classic all rounder. Z fold feels a little unexpected. Bi fold reads more like a mini booklet.

Do I have to fold them myself?

Nope: they arrive pre folded and ready to go.

Can I get a sample first?

Yes. Pick 'Is this a sample order?' to try one before you commit to a big run.

When is a self cover booklet better?

For flyers, zines, or simple handouts: anything where one paper weight does the whole job.

Can I use my own artwork?
