How does mobile check deposit work?
You open your bank's app, choose deposit, enter the amount, and photograph the front and back of the endorsed check. The app sends the images to your bank, which reads the MICR line and the amount and sends an electronic image onward for collection. The original paper never travels.
This is possible because of the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, known as Check 21, which took effect on October 28, 2004. It lets banks process checks as images and create substitute checks, paper copies of the front and back that are the legal equivalent of the original. The Federal Reserve notes the law does not require any bank to accept images; mobile deposit is a service each bank chooses to offer on its own terms.
How do you endorse a check for mobile deposit?
Sign the back inside the endorsement area and add the wording your bank requires. Many banks ask for For mobile deposit only, and some want the bank name as well. Some apps also ask you to tick a box confirming the endorsement.
The wording matters beyond bank policy. Regulation CC includes an indemnity for banks when a check deposited by image is later deposited again on paper. A bank that accepts the paper check cannot claim that indemnity if the check bore a restrictive endorsement inconsistent with the paper deposit. Our guide on how to endorse a check covers blank, restrictive and business stamp endorsements.
What are the limits on mobile check deposits?
There is no federal cap. Each bank sets its own limits, often per check, per day and per month, and they may be lower for new accounts or rise with account history. Business accounts may have different limits from personal ones.
| Limit type | Who sets it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Per check amount | Your bank | Maximum for a single check |
| Daily total | Your bank | Combined total for one business day |
| Monthly total | Your bank | Rolling or calendar month total |
| Eligible check types | Your bank | Some exclude foreign, third party or savings bond items |
| Cutoff time | Your bank | Deposits after it count as the next business day |
If a check exceeds your limit, deposit it at a branch or ATM instead, or ask whether a temporary increase is possible.
How long can a bank hold a mobile deposit?
Regulation CC sets maximum hold times for most check deposits, and the dollar thresholds were adjusted for inflation on July 1, 2025. Since then, the minimum amount generally available by the next business day is $275, and the large deposit threshold is $6,725.
| Rule | Amount since July 1, 2025 |
|---|---|
| Minimum next day availability | $275 |
| Large deposit threshold | $6,725 |
| New account amount | $6,725 |
| Repeatedly overdrawn threshold | $6,725 |
The CFPB cautions that your bank may use a different timetable for deposits made by phone, so read your bank's funds availability policy. Banks can also extend holds for new accounts, large deposits, repeated overdrafts or reasonable doubt about collection. Some older consumer pages still show the previous $225 figure, so rely on your bank's current disclosure.
How long should you keep a paper check after mobile deposit?
The CFPB recommends holding onto the check for several days after deposit until you are sure it has posted to your account, with no pending status and no holds, then destroying it by shredding it or cutting it up. Many banks state a specific retention period in their mobile deposit agreement, so follow yours if it is longer.
- Write the deposit date on the front of the check
- File it in one place, not loose in a wallet or drawer
- Check that the deposit shows as posted, not pending
- Confirm any hold has been released
- Wait out your bank's stated retention period
- Shred the check, do not throw it away whole
Never deposit the same check twice, by app and then at a branch or another bank. Even an accident can trigger a returned item, fees and a fraud review.
What happens if a mobile deposit is rejected or returned?
Rejections usually happen within hours: a blurry image, a missing endorsement, a mismatched amount or a check that exceeds your limit. Fix the problem and resubmit, or take the paper to a branch. Returns happen later, when the paying bank refuses the check, for example because of insufficient funds, a stop payment or a stale date. The bank reverses the credit and may charge a fee.
This is why you keep the paper until the deposit is final. If a check is returned, the original helps you ask the writer for a replacement. If it bounced because it was more than six months old, our guide to how long a check is good for explains why.
Is mobile check deposit safe?
For the depositor, mobile deposit is generally convenient and secure when you use your bank's official app on a device you control. The larger risks sit with check writers: a stolen check can be washed, photographed and deposited without a teller ever seeing the paper. FinCEN's 2023 alert on mail theft related check fraud described how stolen checks are altered and deposited.
If you write checks, fill every field, use pigmented gel ink and review cleared check images weekly. If you receive checks, deposit them promptly and never accept a request to deposit a check and send part of the money back, a classic fake check scam.
What should businesses know about mobile deposit?
Business owners often deposit customer checks by phone between jobs. Use the business account's app, endorse with a business deposit stamp or the wording your bank requires, and record each deposit in your books the same day. Keep a simple log of check number, payer, amount and date so returned items are easy to trace. For the checks you write yourself, our step by step guide on how to write a check covers every field, and you can order business checks in the format that suits how you pay.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I keep a check after mobile deposit?
Keep it until the deposit has fully posted and any hold is released, and at least as long as your bank's mobile deposit agreement requires. The CFPB suggests holding the check for several days after deposit, then shredding it or cutting it up. Store it somewhere safe in the meantime and mark it as deposited.
Why is my mobile deposit on hold?
Banks may hold funds under Regulation CC and their own policies, and the CFPB notes the timetable for mobile deposits may differ from in person deposits. Common reasons for longer holds include new accounts, large deposits over $6,725, repeated overdrafts or doubts about the check. Your bank must tell you when funds will be available.
Can I mobile deposit a check made out to my business?
Yes, into the business account through the business banking app, if your bank offers it. Endorse with the business name and the wording your bank requires, or a deposit stamp. Do not deposit a business check into a personal account; the bank may reject it and it confuses your records.
What happens if I deposit a check by mobile and then at the bank?
The second deposit will usually be caught and returned, and you may be charged a fee or flagged for review. Under Regulation CC, the bank that accepted the second deposit may also seek indemnity. If it happens by accident, tell your bank right away and do not spend the duplicate funds.
