Previews are scaled to the screen, not actual size proofs. Neither mode stretches the image. Fill describes covering the print, not distorting it.
Try the 10 × 8 inch example
A 3600 × 2400 pixel image fits inside 10 × 8 inches at 360 PPI, leaving top and bottom margins. Filling the same print uses a 3000 × 2400 pixel crop at 300 PPI and keeps 83.33% of the original image area. Move the crop horizontally to choose which edge to preserve.
These calculations use pixels divided by printed inches without resampling. A higher PPI does not restore blur or guarantee print quality. Cropping can remove important faces, text or edge details. Confirm bleed and crop allowances specific to your printer separately.

How this tool works
Fit PPI = max(pixel width ÷ print width, pixel height ÷ print height). Fill PPI = min of those values. Retained area = crop pixel width × crop pixel height ÷ original pixel area × 100. Print dimensions are in inches.
Use the actual specification from your selected printer. Defaults are examples, not universal production requirements. These tools do not inspect a PDF, certify a print file, provide a supplier quote or predict sales.
