What this checks
A routing number is nine digits. The first two digits must fall in a range used by the Federal Reserve, and the ninth digit is a check digit calculated from the other eight. A typo usually breaks one of those rules.

How this tool works
Weighted sum = 3 × (d1 + d4 + d7) + 7 × (d2 + d5 + d8) + (d3 + d6 + d9). The number is well formed when that sum is a multiple of 10 and the first two digits fall in 00 to 12, 21 to 32, 61 to 72 or 80.
