Custom beach towel printing: face, back and what washing does

A custom beach towel is one of the few promotional items with a genuinely large printed surface. Ours is 30 by 60 inches, with a plush microfiber face carrying your edge to edge full color design and a solid white cotton terry loop back, machine washable, in either horizontal or vertical orientation. The design question is not whether your artwork fits but what a towel does to it once it is soft, folded and laundered.

Two faces, two materials, one decision

The construction is the first thing to understand. The printed side is microfiber, which is a synthetic face that takes full color. The other side is white cotton terry loop, which is the side that actually dries a person.

That means the back is never printed and never colored. If your design concept depends on the towel being your brand color on both sides, this is not the product. What you get is a full color graphic panel on one face and a functional white towel on the other.

The same construction appears on our picnic blankets, which pair a plush microfiber printed face with a water repellent polyester oxford lining, and on our sweatshirt blankets, where the front is printed edge to edge and the back stays heather gray.

Designing for 30 by 60 inches

A towel is a large, soft rectangle with a strong aspect ratio, and that ratio is the main constraint.

At 30 by 60 it is exactly 1 to 2. A square logo centered on that shape leaves two large empty areas, so most successful towel designs either fill the whole field with a pattern or a photograph, or use a band structure that reads down the length. Choose horizontal or vertical orientation deliberately, because it changes which way the design reads when the towel is spread on sand versus draped over a shoulder.

Edge to edge printing means you should plan for the edges to be trimmed and hemmed, so keep anything essential clearly in from the perimeter. A name or a date sitting close to the hem is the classic mistake.

The towel will also spend most of its life folded. Fold your artwork mentally in half and then in quarters and check that something recognizable is still visible on the outside face. A design whose only mark sits dead center disappears in a beach bag.

Resolution at this size

Thirty by sixty inches is bigger than most posters, and people routinely send artwork made for a screen.

Work out the effective resolution by dividing the pixel width of your image by the printed width in inches. A file 4,500 pixels wide across 30 inches gives 150 pixels per inch, which is a reasonable target on a soft textile because the fiber itself limits fine detail. Raising the resolution number in software without adding pixels adds nothing.

Textiles are forgiving about sharpness and unforgiving about pattern. Fine repeating lines, moire prone grids and hairline type all suffer on a plush face, because the pile has its own texture at a similar scale.

Color, and what laundering does

Our Studio works in RGB and we do not offer color matching, so treat brand color on a towel as close rather than exact. A plush surface also reads slightly softer and darker than the same color on coated paper, because the pile casts small shadows.

Laundering is the second shift. Color fastness to washing is a measured property in textiles: ISO 105-C06 specifies methods for determining the resistance of textile color to domestic and commercial laundering using a reference detergent, and notes that its multiple test can approximate up to five domestic launderings. You are not going to commission that test for a promotional towel, but the standard exists because color on textiles is expected to move, and a small settling after the first few washes is normal rather than a defect.

Ours are machine washable. Wash cool, avoid bleach, and expect the first wash to soften both the hand and the color slightly.

Where a towel is the right gift

  • Hospitality and resorts, where the towel is used on site and then taken home.
  • Summer staff gifts, because a towel is unarguably useful.
  • Sponsorship and team merchandise, since the large field suits bold graphics.
  • Wedding and celebration keepsakes for a destination event.
  • Prize tiers, where one substantial item beats many small ones.

Where it is wrong: a passing giveaway at an indoor show, because a towel cannot be pocketed and nobody wants to carry one around a hall.

Shipping, weight and lead time

Towels are bulky rather than heavy, and bulk drives freight cost. Thirty by sixty inches folds to a substantial parcel, so a hundred towels is a pallet problem rather than a box problem.

They are also made to order, which means the print is one step and finishing is another. Plan backwards from the date they must be in hand, and if they are shipping to a venue, work back from the receiving date in the exhibitor manual rather than the opening day.

Beach towel checklist

  • Accept that the back is white cotton terry and cannot be colored.
  • Design to a 1 to 2 ratio and choose horizontal or vertical deliberately.
  • Keep essential content well in from the hemmed perimeter.
  • Check that something recognizable survives folding in quarters.
  • Target around 150 pixels per inch at 30 by 60 inches.
  • Avoid fine repeating lines and hairline type on a plush face.
  • Expect color to settle slightly after the first wash.

Frequently asked questions

Can both sides of a custom beach towel be printed?

No. Our beach towel has a plush microfiber face that carries your edge to edge full color design and a solid white cotton terry loop back, which is the side that dries a person. If a design depends on the towel being your brand color throughout, this is not the right product.

What resolution does a 30 by 60 inch towel need?

Divide your image width in pixels by the printed width in inches to get the effective resolution. About 4,500 pixels across 30 inches gives 150 pixels per inch, which is a sensible target on a soft textile. Increasing the resolution setting without adding pixels does not add detail.

Do printed beach towels fade in the wash?

Expect a slight settling rather than a failure. Color fastness to laundering is a measured property in textiles, defined in ISO 105-C06 using a reference detergent, which exists precisely because color on fabric is expected to move. Ours are machine washable: wash cool, avoid bleach, and accept a small change after the first wash.

Are beach towels a good promotional gift?

At the right moment, yes. They are unarguably useful and the printed field is large enough for real design. They are the wrong choice as a passing giveaway at an indoor show, because a towel cannot be pocketed. Treat them as a prize, a staff gift or a hospitality item rather than a handout.
