Trades work is sold by proximity and proof. Somebody sees the truck on the street, the sign on the lawn and the finished result, then calls. Print exists to make that chain easy to follow, which means the phone number has to survive a moving vehicle, a work pocket and a rainy porch, and your license number has to appear where your state says it must.

Several states require a contractor license number on advertising, and the definition of advertising is broader than most people expect. California requires a licensee to include the license number in all forms of advertising, and the licensing board reads advertising broadly enough to cover business cards and vehicle lettering. Florida requires the license number in advertisements but its statutes specifically exclude business stationery, so the rule lands differently on a letterhead than on a door hanger. Since January 2025 California also allows unlicensed work under $1,000 in narrow circumstances, and any advertising for that work must state that the person is not licensed. Confirm the current rule with your state board before printing, because these change and the printed piece outlives the change.
Magnets stick to flat steel. Many modern vehicle panels are aluminum or composite, and a door with a crease or a curve leaves the magnet edge lifted, which is where highway air gets under it. Do the fridge magnet test on the exact panel before ordering. Once fitted, take the magnet off and put it back every few days: trapped moisture and grit under a magnet left on for months will mark the paint, and that conversation with a customer costs more than the magnet.
A trades card lives in a pocket with a tape measure and a phone, gets damp, and is handed over with dirty hands. Thickness is the specification that matters, because a thin card folds and a folded card gets binned. A heavier stock also does quiet work on a doorstep, where the customer is deciding whether you are a real business. Keep the layout plain and put the phone number first, because the card is usually read once, standing up, in poor light.
The strongest list you have is the road you are working on today. Neighbors have the same roof age, the same trees and the same drainage. A door hanger left on that street while the truck is visible converts far better than a mailing to a postcode, and it costs less. Do not put them in mailboxes. Under 18 USC 1725 it is an offense to knowingly deposit unstamped mailable matter in a letter box with intent to avoid postage, and the hole and slit on a hanger exist so you do not have to. Check local soliciting rules before a route. A tear off tab with the phone number gives the customer something to keep once the hanger goes in the recycling.
A finished job is your best advertisement, and a sign on the lawn is how the neighbors find out who did it. Pair it with a vehicle magnet and a card thick enough to survive a work pocket. Vehicle magnets need a flat steel panel and periodic removal, so confirm the surface and care instructions before ordering.
Build your brand kit →In some states yes, and the test is whether the piece counts as advertising. California requires the license number in all forms of advertising under Business and Professions Code section 7030.5, and the licensing board reads that broadly enough to include business cards. Florida requires the number in advertisements but excludes business stationery in its statutes, so the same card can be treated differently in another state. Check your own state licensing board before printing, and reprint if your license status changes.
Only if the panel is flat steel. Aluminum and composite panels, which are common on newer vehicles, will not hold a magnet at all, and a curved or creased door leaves the edge lifted so highway air can get under it. Test the exact panel with a fridge magnet before ordering. If the panel fails the test, a vinyl decal is the alternative, at the cost of being semi permanent rather than removable.
Thicker than a standard card, because of where it lives. A 14pt card is the everyday standard, while a 32pt card is more than double that heft and survives a work pocket, a damp jacket and being handed over on site. The extra thickness also signals an established business on a doorstep, which is doing real work in a trade where the customer is deciding whether to trust you.
No. Under 18 USC 1725 it is an offense to knowingly deposit unstamped mailable matter in a letter box with intent to avoid postage, and it is the fastest way to turn a marketing route into a complaint. Hang them on the handle, which is what the hole and slit are designed for. Check local soliciting ordinances and any homeowner association rules before running a route, since some neighborhoods restrict door to door distribution.
