An independent shop has three surfaces that do the selling: the window somebody walks past, the counter where the transaction happens and the bag that leaves with them. Print is how those three stay recognizably one shop. It is also where several of your legal notices live, because a refund policy and a stored value card are both printed obligations before they are design work.

What a shop puts in a customer's hand.

Your refund policy is a sign, not a paragraph on a website

Several states make the refund policy a posted notice at the store, and they are specific about where it goes. New York General Business Law section 218-a lets a retailer satisfy the requirement in one of five ways: a sign attached to the item, a sign on each cash register, a sign clearly visible from the register, a sign at each public entrance, or, for online selling, a notice shown near the item before billing information is requested. The content matters as much as the placement, covering whether refunds are offered, the conditions, time limits, whether sale merchandise is excluded and any restocking fee stated as a dollar amount or a percentage. Rules differ by state, and the posting requirement is enforced against the store rather than the sign maker, so check your own before the counter card is printed.

A punch card and a stored value card are different objects

A stamp card that records visits carries no money, so it is yours to design freely. The moment a card holds a balance a customer paid for, federal law attaches to the printed piece itself. Under 15 USC 1693l-1 a gift certificate or store gift card cannot expire earlier than five years after issue or the last load, the expiration terms must be stated clearly and conspicuously, and any dormancy, inactivity or service fee must appear on the card with its amount and how often it can be charged. That is a block of small type you have to plan a layout around, not squeeze in at proof stage. Keep the two products visually distinct so staff never hand over the wrong one.

The window changes more often than the fixtures

Retail windows turn over with the season, the sale and the new arrival, and most shops end up taping paper to glass because reprinting a mounted display is slow. A snap frame separates the fixture from the message: aluminum edges open, the old sheet comes out, the new one goes in, and the frame never leaves the wall. Order the frame and the poster as a matched pair of size and orientation, and note that the protective film that keeps the sheet from scuffing also softens color slightly, which matters if a product photograph is doing the work. Print the next two or three changeovers in one run so a Saturday window swap does not wait on a delivery.

The bag is the last piece of branding and the cheapest

A plain mailer or a kraft bag sealed with a printed sticker looks considered and costs almost nothing compared to custom printed packaging. A business card sized sticker does double duty here: it seals the bag, it carries the shop name and the handle somebody will search, and it survives the journey to wherever the customer opens it. The variable is the surface. Recycled kraft, matte laminated mailers and textured tissue all take adhesive differently, so test the sticker on the exact bag you stock before ordering a run, and keep the layout to a name, a mark and one contact route, because at that size a third line stops being read.

The counter, the window and the bag.

Make the shop feel like your brand, from the window to the counter. Pair a clear poster with a useful loyalty card, then keep the same colors and typography across both. Confirm the finish accepts your chosen pen or stamp before ordering a loyalty card run.

Questions from independent retail

Do I have to post my return policy in the shop?

In several states yes, and it is a printed sign rather than a website page. New York General Business Law section 218-a accepts a sign attached to the item, a sign on each register, a sign visible from the register, a sign at each public entrance, or an online notice shown before billing details are requested. It also expects the conditions to be spelled out, including time limits, sale merchandise and any restocking fee. Confirm the current rule in your own state before printing.

Can I put an expiration date on a loyalty card?

On a stamp card that holds no money, yes, and you should, because an open ended promise is hard to close. On a card that holds a balance the customer paid for, federal law under 15 USC 1693l-1 sets a floor of five years from issue or the last load, requires the terms to be stated clearly and conspicuously, and requires any inactivity or service fee to be printed on the card with its amount and frequency. Plan the layout around that type before you design it.

Will a printed sticker stick to a kraft paper bag?

Usually, but kraft is the surface that catches shops out. Recycled and uncoated kraft is porous and often dusty from its own fiber, laminated mailers are slick, and cold weather during shipping reduces initial tack on both. Order a small quantity first, seal a bag with one, leave it a day, then try to peel it. Test on the exact bag you stock rather than a similar one, because two kraft mailers from different suppliers behave differently.

What size poster works in a shop window?

Measure the clear glass first, then choose from the eight sizes between 11 by 14 and 24 by 36 inches. A window read from the sidewalk wants the larger end, while a counter or fitting room sign works small. If you change the message with the season, buy a snap frame in the matching size and orientation once, then reorder only the paper, which makes the changeover a two minute job instead of a reinstall.
