Start with the correct canvas size
Canva offers a business card preset, which in the US is 3.5 × 2 in. Use it, or create a custom design and type 3.5 × 2 in yourself. Do not start from a social media template and resize it later. Resizing changes proportions and can push text toward the edges.
If you want a vertical card, set 2 × 3.5 in. For a square card, check the exact size your printer offers before you create the canvas, because square cards come in more than one size. For cards ordered outside the US, use the local size, often 85 × 55 mm in Western Europe.
Once the canvas is ready, turn on the print bleed display in the file settings. A dashed border appears around the design showing where the paper will be cut. Everything outside that line is bleed and will be trimmed away. Keep text inside the safe margins
The cutter can land slightly off, so anything important needs breathing room from the edge. Canva can show margins as well as bleed. Keep your name, contact details, logo and any QR code inside the margin guides, roughly 0.125 in inside the cut line. A practical habit is to leave even more room on the contact side, where a clipped phone number is costly.
Backgrounds and full edge images are the opposite. They must stretch all the way past the cut line into the bleed area. If you drag a background image and it stops exactly at the cut line, the finished cards can show a hairline of white along one edge. Pull each background element slightly past the outer bleed border to be safe.
Use images and elements that will print sharply
Canva makes it easy to add photos and graphics, but not all of them hold up at print size. Upload your logo as an SVG or a large PNG with a transparent background. A small logo copied from your website will look fine on screen and blurry in print.
For photos, use the original file from your camera or phone rather than a screenshot or a downloaded social media image, which is usually compressed. As a rule, a photo filling a whole card side should be at least 1125 × 675 pixels. Avoid very thin lines under about 0.25 pt and tiny text under 7 pt. Both can break up when printed. Understand how color will shift
Your screen shows color in RGB, mixing light. Printers use CMYK inks on paper. Some very bright RGB colors, such as neon green, electric blue and vivid orange, cannot be reproduced exactly in CMYK and will print duller. This is normal and not a printer error.
If your plan offers the CMYK color profile when downloading as PDF Print, choose it. Canva then converts colors before you send the file, so you can see any shift on screen first. Download with the right settings
These are the settings most printers expect. Menu names change from time to time, but the choices are consistent.
- File type: PDF Print, not PDF Standard, PNG or JPG.
- Crop marks and bleed: turn on, unless your printer asks for bleed without marks.
- Flatten PDF: turn on if you use transparent elements, unusual fonts or effects.
- Color profile: CMYK if available.
- Pages: include both the front and the back, with the front as page one.
The result should be a single PDF with two pages. Open it before uploading and zoom in to check text edges and the bleed around each page. If you see white borders inside the crop marks, a background did not reach the bleed.
Order from Canva or send the file elsewhere
Canva offers its own printing, and you can also take the same PDF to any print shop. The file is the same either way. The main differences between printers are the paper stocks, finishes, quantities and delivery options on offer, so compare those rather than assuming one route is better.
If you send the file elsewhere, check that the printer's size matches your canvas exactly. A card designed at 3.5 × 2 in fits most US printers. If the printer requires a specific bleed amount, follow their number.
