Print artwork and files / A PRACTICAL GUIDE

Print size chart: every size with bleed and pixels

Every flat Voqado product has three numbers: the finished size it is cut to (the trim), the bleed added on every edge, and a safe inset inside the trim where text belongs. Make your file the trim plus the bleed on both sides. A standard 3.5 × 2 inch business card has 0.055 inch of bleed, so its file is 3.61 × 2.11 inches, or 1083 × 633 pixels at 300 PPI. The tables below come from the same print profiles the Studio draws its trim, bleed and safe lines from, so they match what you see when you design.

Line diagram of a standard business card drawn to scale: outer file edge at 3.61 by 2.11 inches, red trim line at 3.5 by 2 inches and blue dashed safe line 0.07 inch inside the trim.

How to read the chart

File size with bleed is the finished size plus twice the bleed. Pixels at 300 PPI is that file size multiplied by 300 and rounded. Keep every word and logo inside the safe inset; let backgrounds and photos run to the outer edge so a small shift at the cutter never leaves a white sliver.

Bleed is not one universal number here. Many printers publish 1/8 inch (0.125) as a general rule, and the U.S. Government Publishing Office guidelines use it as a minimum. Our profiles record what each product is actually set up for: 0.055 inch on the published standard card, 0.059 inch (1.5 mm) on many cards and flat pieces, 0.079 inch (2 mm) on several poster sizes and 0.25 inch on the 18 × 24 and 24 × 36 inch posters. Use the number for your size. Several sizes were recorded in millimeters, which is why a few finished sizes read 5.472 rather than 5.5.

The Studio sets its own image target by size: 300 pixels per inch for pieces up to 24 inches on the long side, 150 up to 60 inches, and 100 beyond that, because a banner is read from across a room.

Shaped cuts carry no trim, bleed or safe line in the Studio, because their recorded size is a bounding box, not the cut: Rounded corner business cards, circle business cards, oval business cards, leaf business cards, white plastic business cards, clear business cards, frosted business cards and business card stickers. The plastic cards are recorded at 3.375 × 2.125 inches, a little smaller than a paper card. Use the template on the product page for those.

Invitations and event cards

Some invitation sizes are named differently on the product page, so design to the size on record. The invitation and event printing guide matches each card to an envelope.

Every size here can be ordered from the poster collection. The 8.5 × 11 inch poster on custom and outdoor posters is recorded at 216 × 280 mm (8.504 × 11.024 inches), while bulk posters at that size are recorded at exactly 8.5 × 11. The 18 × 24 and 24 × 36 inch posters need a full 0.25 inch of bleed but keep a narrow 0.079 inch safe inset, so check both lines on screen.

Signs and banners

Large format files get big fast, so this table gives the Studio image target instead of pixels at 300 PPI. Multiply the file size in inches by the target to get the pixels you need.

Long vinyl banners, 15 feet and up, carry almost an inch of bleed and safe inset, so keep text well in from the edge.

What is not in these tables

  • Stickers and labels are mostly shaped cuts, so the Studio draws no trim, bleed or safe line for them. Die cut singles and kiss cut stickers are recorded with 0.059 inch of bleed.
  • Booklets are multi page; saddle stitch and self cover booklets carry 0.125 inch of bleed on every page.
  • Apparel, drinkware, bags and packaging print inside a decoration area or a dieline, shown on each product page.
  • Colored envelopes are not custom printed.

For the reasoning behind bleed, read what is bleed in printing. For pixel math on photos, see pixels to print size, and for cards specifically, business card size in pixels. ISO 216 paper sizes explains why A4 and US Letter disagree. The free bleed calculator adds bleed to any custom size.

Frequently asked questions

What size should my business card file be?

For standard, matte, glossy, uncoated, soft touch, QR code, loyalty and appointment cards: 3.61 × 2.11 inches, which is 1083 × 633 pixels at 300 PPI, with text kept 0.07 inch inside the 3.5 × 2 inch trim. Other paper cards are recorded with 0.056 or 0.059 inch of bleed, shown in the table.

Is bleed always 1/8 inch?

No. 1/8 inch is a common general rule, but Voqado profiles record the bleed each product is set up for. It ranges from 0.055 inch on standard cards and 0.059 inch on many flat pieces to 0.25 inch on 18 × 24 and 24 × 36 inch posters, and almost an inch on long vinyl banners.

What resolution do I need for a large poster or banner?

The Studio aims for 300 pixels per inch up to 24 inches on the long side, 150 up to 60 inches and 100 beyond. A banner seen from across a room does not need 300 PPI, and a file that large would be unwieldy.

Why does a size say 5.472 instead of 5.5?

Some sizes were recorded in millimeters. 139 mm is 5.472 inches. Design to the number on record, because that is the size the Studio and the print file use.

What about circle, oval or rounded corner cards?

Shaped cuts have a bounding box rather than a rectangular trim, so the Studio draws no trim, bleed or safe line for them. Use the template from the product page and keep text well inside the outline.
